This project combined industrial and interaction design in a fascinating mix of tradition and innovation. Turbochef makes ovens for commercial kitchens that cook up to twelve times faster than normal ovens, but with excellent quality. This oven was their first entry in the consumer market, positioned at the high end to compete with Viking, Thermador, and the like.

I led the ethnographic customer research, competitive analysis, and stayed closely involved during the design work of the hardware and interface. We created a "hearth" look for the oven that contrasted with the advanced technology inside, and which made it stand apart from the sterile industrial look of competitors. The interface was challenging as the speed-cook technology required many more inputs to work, and we needed to make it un-intimidating compared to simple conventional oven controls.
